With the iTunes Movie Store and AppleTV, one would think there would be little need for other other online platforms for online movie distribution on the Mac. Not true. Amazon's Unbox went live for Mac a few months ago and has been reported to be at least a mild success. Today, Netflix followed up an earlier remark by announcing that it will support the Mac platform by the end of the year. In a blogpost, "Brent" wrote:
And, for all of you Mac users (of which I am one) weve been busy working getting a solution that will allow you to watch instantly on your Mac. So hang in there - well have something for you by the end of the year.
Sounds like they really mean business this time. Got an alpha version to proffer?
In separate news for Netflix, an agreement was reached to distribute 2,500 movies from the Starz Play, their online distribution channel. Popular titles such as "Spider-Man 3," "No Country for Old Men" and "Superbad" as well as many others will now available online instead of the mail delivery method of distribution.
Will I use Netflix to watch my online movies on a Mac? Not likely, but I'll wait until I see it to disbelieve it. Anything's possible.
