VP of Finance comes to this IT pilot fish's office to discuss an issue -- and since this is the guy who signs off on every large expense at this big manufacturer, fish is appropriately deferential.

"Just outside of one of my windows, construction had started on a 50-by-220-foot concrete foundation for a building that was to house a few pieces of new equipment," says fish.

"As the finance VP was leaving, he looked out the window and called me over to it.

"He asked, 'What are they building?'

"I told him.

"He asked, 'Is it capital or expense?'

"I was speechless."
