Surface Pro 3: 3rd time's a charm for Microsoft

Surface Pro 3 Release Date: NOW.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) seems to be proving the old adage: Wait for version 3.0. The bleeding-edge versions before iteration #3 usually seem too compromised for general use, but Redmond keeps plugging at it, to get it right the third time. It's déjà vu all over again.

It happened with Windows, with Office, with IE, and now it seems with Surface.

In IT Blogwatch, bloggers seem to surprise themselves with Surface love.

Never one to overlook a cliché opportunity, Gregg Keizer says Microsoft has woken up and smelled the coffee:

Microsoft today doubled down on the strategy to push its in-house Surface as a 2-in-1 device [for] business customers. ... The Surface Pro 3...starts as a tablet, but with the addition of an optional keyboard, ends as a lightweight notebook. ... Microsoft aimed the Surface squarely -- almost exclusively -- at commercial customers.

The new 12-in. tablets, will start at $799 for...64GB of storage space, 4GB of system RAM, and an Intel Core i3 processor, then slide up the price scale [to] $1,949, with the higher-priced models boasting more storage, more RAM and faster processors. But...customers will have to fork over another $130 for a keyboard cover, which still is not packaged with the tablet.

Microsoft didn't breathe the words "Windows RT." ... By skewing toward corporate, Microsoft avoids the price war in the consumer tablet market.  MORE

 

And Barbara Krasnoff is interesting ... as ever:

It’s strange how prone to missteps the company seems to have been over the past few years. ... Microsoft has never really been a consumer company [but a] major misstep in the past few years is probably its attempt to have its enterprise cake and let the consumers eat it too. ... So in today’s press event...the underlying message is that the company is going for people who want to work with their equipment rather than watch movies on it.

At first glance, the Surface Pro 3 is indeed an impressive piece of hardware. ... 2160 x 1440 HD display (at a 3 x 2 aspect ratio)...a little over 1.76 lb...includes a kickstand that that can bring [it] up to an angle of 150 degrees...a full-sized USB 3.0 port, a microSD card reader and a Mini Displayport. ... A very interesting addition is the Surface Pen ($50), which Microsoft insisted during the press event was not a stylus.  MORE

 

But Eric Slivka utters that verboten S-word:

Microsoft's Panos Panay highlighted a number of improvements. [He] highlighted how the very thin optical stack...brings the content close to the surface of the tablet, allowing for greater precision with the stylus...which makes it appear as if ink is flowing directly from the pen tip.

Microsoft partnered with Adobe to show a preview of Photoshop optimized for the tablet device, with larger icons and support for both stylus and touch.  MORE

 

Wow: Preston Gralla is much less grumpy that usual:

[The] Surface Pro 3 may do the impossible: Save the struggling Surface line from adding on to its more than $1 billion in losses.

It really can be a laptop...it's a true productivity machine. ... It really is a tablet...not a luggable slab. ... It's priced to sell...$930 is not an outrageous amount to pay for a well-made ultrabook that does double-duty as a tablet.  MORE
