Firmware update gives 25% boost.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has made the Surface Pro 2 better. With a big increase in battery life, thanks to a bug fix, it's made its 'full-fat' Windows 8.1 tablet-cum-Ultrabook a more attractive proposition.
In IT Blogwatch, bloggers wonder if it's too little, too late.
Your humble blogwatcher curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment.
Anand Lal Shimpi gives it a spin:
Microsoft pushed out a firmware update that allowed the Marvell WiFi solution to drive down to even lower power states.
...In our web browsing battery life test, Surface Pro 2 now manages better battery life than Surface 2 [8.33 hours] a nearly 25% increase. ... Video playback also sees a boost [7.73 hours] still reasonable at 16%. MORE
It's important: Mark Mark Wilson's words: [You're fired -Ed.]
The update made significant improvements to the battery life of the device. ... It's rare to see such an improvement from a software update.
...If you own a Surface Pro 2, make sure you have the latest firmware update installed. MORE
Across three separate posts, Preston Gralla lays out the argument for the defense:
The full-blown Windows 8 Surface Pro 2...uses Intel's power-sipping Haswell chip...gets plenty of life on a battery charge [is] a full-blown Windows 8 tablet...runs desktop apps, and can do double-duty as a Windows ultrabook.
...If you're looking for innovative new tablet form factors, you'll need to look to Windows 8 tablets, not to Apple. ... Convertibles, hybrids, or two-in-one devices...can function not only as tablets, but as ultrabooks [with] detachable or foldaway keyboards. ... Surface Pro 2 tablets are not just traditional tablets, but are for getting work done as well. ... Apple has left that market wide open for Microsoft.
...Microsoft [says] you can't get real work done with iPads or its anemic iWorks...iPads are little more than toys...the only reason Apple is now giving away its iWorks suite is that no one wants to buy it...they don't stack up against Surface tablets when it comes to productivity. ... Apple is far behind Microsoft.
...There's absolutely no doubt that a Surface Pro 2 [with] a Touch Type 2 keyboard and a free version of Office is a far more effective tool for getting serious work done than an iPad [which is] not well-suited for serious work. MORE
But Peter Patina ain't convinced:
So the moral of the story is... Buy another tablet. Of course the one percent who will try to do some in depth work on it will buy [a Surface 2 Pro] but for the average Joe, buy something else. It will be cheaper and have better battery life.
Also there is another bonus. You won't have windows on your tablet. MORE
Meanwhile, I wonder what gets FeedTheShark?
What gets me is that MS have put out such an impressive update just a week after this went on sale. ... All the reviews are out now, few sites will go back...and review battery life.
...They could have been a lot more positive if MS had only gotten this ready in time for release - or at least made reviewers aware a big boost to battery life was forthcoming. MORE
