One of the coolest things about Android is how completely customizable it is -- and there's no better illustration of that than the Android home screen.
While certain (ahem) other platforms have rigid and static grids of square icons, Android gives you a blank canvas upon which you can create any setup that works for you. From widgets to wallpapers, ROMs to launchers, there's practically no limit to what you can do.
I want to showcase the most interesting, original, and eye-catching Android home screens around. And I want you to score some fantastic free Android gear while we're at it.
So here's the deal: You post a screenshot of your Android home screen. I'll pick out 16 of the coolest ones (with some help from a committee of keen-eyed colleagues) and will feature them in a story next week. I'll let you guys vote on your favorites. The eight home screen owners with the highest number of votes will get free Nexus 7 tablets and $25 gift cards courtesy of the crew at Nvidia, whose quad-core Tegra 3 processors power the devices. (The top four winners' tablets will be 32GB editions; the next four will be 16GB models.)
Easy enough, right? To enter, just post a screenshot of your home screen to Google+. Make sure the post is public, and make sure you include the following items in the post's text:
(1) the hashtag #AndroidPower
(2) a link to this page, so people know what you're talking about: http://blogs.computerworld.com/android/21268/hunt-for-the-hottest-android-home-screens
(If you haven't already, you may want to circle me while you're there, too; let's just say that Google+ will play a key role in the voting process, and you'll hear about it there first. You can also "like" Nvidia's new Tegra 3 Facebook page for more chances to win stuff in the future.)
That's it! You have until this Friday, November 9, at 12 p.m. ET to enter. I'll post the top 16 home screens next Monday (November 12) and will leave the voting open through that week. Then we'll find out who's going home with a new Nexus 7 and $25 gift card.
I know you've got 'em, gang; now's the time to show 'em off.
[The always-fun fine print: In order to win, you must have a valid shipping address in one of the following countries: U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico and its other territories and possessions), Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Australia, China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India (excluding the State of Tamil Nadu), or Brazil.
