The Windows 8 consumer preview download (or 'beta') has been downloaded and picked over by all our favorite bloggers. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is keen to know what we think. In IT Blogwatch, bloggers let us know, in no uncertain terms.

[T]his is an operating system built more for tablets. ... Windows 8 still feels as if it's two different operating systems bolted together...all of Microsoft's creativity has been lavished on the Metro interface rather than the Desktop.
...Metro...is an impressive piece of work. That makes the Desktop all the more a letdown...an afterthought...almost as if Microsoft is embarrassed by it. ... What Microsoft calls "charms" help tie together Metro and the Desktop...but at this stage of development, it simply doesn't feel like it's enough.

Microsoft chose the Android-dominated...telco, device and service-provider centric Mobile World Congress...to officially launch the...preview.
A common complaint about the developer preview was that [Metro] usability [was] poor with keyboard and mouse. All fixed now, according to Microsoft. ... Windows 8 [now] uses the four corners of the screen as hot areas...so bottom left becomes the Start button...top left a kind of alt-tab for switching between running apps, and so on.
...Although billed as the Consumer Preview, Microsoft talked a bit about enterprise features, such as Windows to Go which lets you...run Windows 8 from a USB pen drive.
Microsoft's Kent Walter writes:
Weve been hard at work for many months now...we still have lots more to do, [but] were excited to show you our progress.
With Windows 8, the whole experience of Windows has been reimagined. ... Weve made touch a first-class experience and navigating with a mouse and keyboard fast and fluid. ... It starts with the new Start screen...you can launch apps, switch between tasks, share content, and check notifications.
...[But] weve been careful to stay true to the core features that have made Windows great for decades now. ... All the stuff you know is still here. ... We hope you enjoy the new Windows!
And Paul Thurrott opens the NDA-shackled floodgates:
Microsoft is indeed reimagining everything related to Windows 8, including the branding. ... The new logo, which represents "a windows, not a flag,"...takes on a Metro-like look.
[It] isn't feature complete, not yet, and there are a number of changes and improvements coming. ... Mouse into the upper-right or lower-right corner of the screen and you'll access the Charms interface.
...What's new and perhaps most interesting to people now are the new Metro-style apps...including Xbox Live, Music and Video...Maps, Weather, Finance...Mail, Photos, Calendar, Messaging...People...Xbox Companion. ... And yes, Microsoft is revving the Windows 8 Developer Tools for this release.
Meanwhile, Robert X. Cringely makes a 2/29 gag:
Whether it's a leap forward, backward, or straight into a bottomless pit is the question. ... This is not another hierarchical-folders-and-menus-hey-we-renamed-the-icons-in-Control-Panel-yet-again rehash.
...It's not how far you leap that matters, it's what happens when you land. Will Win8 go splat? ... [It] ought to be interesting to watch, provided you're at a safe distance.
