Google's Ice Cream Sandwich/Nexus event postponed

Well, gang, looks like we'll be waiting a little longer for dessert.

Samsung Google Ice Cream Sandwich Nexus Event

Samsung has officially announced that next week's Android event, at which Ice Cream Sandwich and a new Nexus phone were expected to be unveiled, has been postponed. Per the company's statement:

Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We ask for your understanding regarding any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course.

The wording certainly suggests that the companies didn't want to hold the event so close to the death and funeral of Steve Jobs, though they did not explicitly make that connection.

UPDATE: A Google spokesperson has sent me the following statement: "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing."

Keep in mind that Ice Cream Sandwich and the new Nexus weren't actually expected to ship until later in October, so the product launches themselves may or may not be delayed. Hopefully we'll hear more soon.

UPDATE: Want a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich right now?
