Apple (AAPL) finally condescended to sell a white iPhone 4 -- today is the release date. After almost a year of waiting, foaming fanbois will be able to line up and sport the latest tech fashion accessory. But it'll still track your location (oh, wait, Steve said it doesn't, silly me). In IT Blogwatch, bloggers around the world count their pennies.
Your humble blogwatcher curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment. Not to mention The horrible, horrible truth about Mr. Bump's injuries...
Gregg Keizer still rules:
[It] will be available in the U.S. and 27 other countries, including Canada ... and the U.K., at [U.S.] prices of $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB ... with a two-year service contract.
Apple originally announced the first-ever white iPhone last June ... [but soon] acknowledged "challenging" manufacturing issues and ... delayed [it] until late July. It later revised that to the end of 2010. ... Since then, the ... almost mythical device's ... imminent release [has been] repeatedly foretold.
...Most experts ... believe that Apple will depart from its usual iPhone refresh window ... and debut a new model in September instead. ... Apple will sell the white iPhone ... beginning [today]. AT&T and Verizon outlets will also start selling the smartphone [today].
Dan Moren goes all Homerian on us:
It's been a long and arduous journey to get to this point, one that would frankly make even Odysseus pale. ... Like the Flying Dutchman, the white iPhone 4 seemed doomed never to make port and to bring only doom to those who saw it..
...It will also wing its way ... to Austria, Australia, Belgium, ... China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, [and] Thailand ... [today].
And Ina Fried is in with Apple bigwigs:
It was challenging, Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller said. ... Theres a lot more that goes into both the material science of it ... [and] in how it all works with the sensors.
...It turned out there were a lot of unexpected interactions ... [with] various internal components. Also ... white iPhones need a little more UV protection from the sun.
UV protection? Matt Buchanan is almost racist:
In other words, the white iPhone 4 is a ... ginger.
But "Robert X. Cringely" is less than thrilled:
You could cut the excitement with a knife. I mean a butter knife -- a plastic one. Or maybe just a spork. ... If someone out there can explain why this makes a damned bit of difference ... I'm all ears.
[It] proves just how far around the bend ... fanboys are. Apple really isn't all that far behind them on the looney-tunes scale ... gushing over this thing like it's Scarlett Friggin' Johansson. ... Steve Jobs's reality distortion field may have finally ruptured the starboard nacelles and caused a plasma core breach.
...Because to Apple, we're either idiots ... or sycophants who'll go gaga over ... a new case color.
Oddly, Dan Tynan has a surprisingly similar point of view:
Mayonnaise. Moby Dick. Donald Trump. And now, joining them in the pantheon of Whiteness: The iPhone. ... [It] will revolutionize everything, making your life magical and leaving your breath smelling minty fresh.
...For years, protestors have demanded to see the iPhones long-form birth certificate to prove that it really was born in
Chinathe US of A.
