UPDATE [8/15/11]: It appears the HTC reps were misinformed. See below.
I've heard from two different Android Power readers today who have received messages from HTC customer support saying the Droid Incredible is presently "not on [the] list" for a Gingerbread upgrade. The gang over at droid-life.com heard from yet another Incredible owner who reported the same thing; all of the emails appear to be identical.
The messages say this:
Our goal is to give every customer the best possible experience on every phone. Every HTC phone is a combination of a unique HTC hardware and software experience and a core operating system. We only update our phones if it will provide an overall improved user experience as we balance features, performance and usability. Because of this, we will only be updating certain phones to Gingerbread. At this time, the Droid Incredible is not on that list.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause Shawn, and we hope that this does not detract from your enjoyment and use of the HTC Incredible. We deeply regret any dissatisfaction this issue may have caused. As always, we are here to answer any technical questions or concerns you have from 6am to 1am EDST, 7 days a week, or by phone at 1-866-449-8358. You may also visit us at www.htc.com/us/support for further assistance, user manuals, and helpful tips.
Here's the curious thing: Past emails attributed to HTC support reps indicated that the Incredible was in line for a 2.3 upgrade, supposedly sometime within the second quarter. On top of that, in May tipsters told Engadget that an upgrade was scheduled to hit the phone in "late June." Obviously, those deadlines have come and gone -- but the fact that we were seeing signs of progress makes the notion of a sudden no-go all the more perplexing.
Bear in mind, as evidenced by those past emails, that customer support reps don't always have the most reliable info; this situation aside, we've seen plenty of cases where reps have provided information that's later proven to be wrong. This new twist certainly isn't encouraging, but I wouldn't write it off as a definite denial just yet.
I've reached out to both HTC and Verizon Wireless to try to get an official position on the matter. If/when I hear anything new, I'll update this page with the details.
UPDATE [8/15/11]: It now appears the original Incredible device will, in fact, be getting the bump. Verizon Wireless updated its Droid Incredible Software Update page on August 15 to include information about an Android 2.3 upgrade for the phone. Typically, an upgrade begins within about a week once those type of materials have appeared.
UPDATE #2 [8/17/11]: Verizon has now posted a message on its support forums saying that the upgrade has been delayed. "Our product team is going through more testing," the message says. "Once we know for sure when the update is coming, we will post more info." In other words, the Incredible will get Gingerbread, but at this point, it's anyone's guess as to when.
UPDATE #3 [8/31/11]: HTC has now confirmed that the Droid Incredible will receive Gingerbread sometime in September. You can find the most current updates on the phone's upgrade status at my Android 2.3 upgrade list; it's always kept up-to-date with the latest info available for all devices.
