Android 2.2 for the Cliq? Motorola may have made a typo

Motorola sent a glimmer of hope to owners of its Cliq Android phones this morning -- but that glimmer may have actually been an error.

The info in question came from Motorola's official Twitter account, @MotoMobile, around 10:40 a.m. ET today. Someone on the account sent out the following message:

Android 2.2 Cliq Motorola

Cliq and Cliq XT? Android 2.2? Wait a minute -- wha...?

The reason for the confusion, of course, is that Motorola has never mentioned "Cliq" and "Android 2.2" in the same sentence up till now -- at least, not in any promising way. Thus far, the Cliq and Cliq XT have remained on the seemingly eternal waiting list for the Android 2.1 upgrade, with no mention of whether 2.2 will ever follow.

So does Motorola's tweet indicate a change of heart? Will the company's long-neglected offspring finally be getting a Froyo fix?

I wouldn't count on it.

First of all, Motorola has already deleted the aforementioned tweet. Not a good sign. And the link to which the tweet pointed -- the company's standard Android software news chart -- indicates nothing beyond the same vague statement that's been there for ages:

Upgrade to Android 2.1 - testing in process, planned for late Q3/early Q4

What's more, the wording of the tweet -- "Our work continues on upgrading Cliq and Cliq XT to Android 2.2" -- doesn't exactly make sense. Were Motorola intending to announce that it'd bumped the devices up to the Froyo upgrade path, that would certainly be no "continuation" of any work we've been aware of so far. And it'd be a bit atypical for a company to apologize for delays in that context, too.

Putting it all together, my best guess is that someone from Motorola made a Monday morning typo; the intended message was likely that work on the Android 2.1 upgrade is still underway for the Cliq and the Cliq XT. I've reached out to both Motorola and T-Mobile for comment and will update this page if/when I hear anything back.

[UPDATE: A T-Mobile spokesperson has confirmed that the mention of Android 2.2 for the Cliq was incorrect. "We continue to work on upgrading Cliq and Cliq XT to Android 2.1," she says. Motorola has also now re-sent its original tweet with the version number adjusted.]

Remember, you can find the latest Froyo status for any device at Android Power's Android 2.2 upgrade list. It's always kept up-to-date with the latest info available.
