Some good news and some bad news for Sprint Android customers this morning: If you're on the HTC EVO 4G, Sprint expects to have Android 2.2 rolled out to you "in the near future." If you're on the HTC Hero or Samsung Moment, however, you're out of luck.
According to a message posted by a Sprint employee on the company's Web site, the carrier is now in the midst of "finalizing" the Android 2.2 upgrade for its phones. The initial message mentioned only the EVO 4G by name, but after several comments asking about the status of the Hero and the Moment, the same Sprint employee responded with the following:
"No, it will not. 2.2 will not be available for HTC Hero or Samsung Moment"
UPDATE: Sprint has now further confirmed this via Twitter. The company sent out the following update Friday afternoon:
"HTC EVO will be updated to Android 2.2; Samsung Moment & HTC Hero will not. Future devices launching w/ 2.1 will be also be updated to 2.2."
Previously, the HTC Hero had been in the "iffy" section of our Android 2.2 upgrade list, as its name had been conspicuously left out of previous discussions by HTC on which handsets would get Froyo. The Moment, meanwhile, had been under the "no telling yet" column; up until now, both Sprint and Samsung had remained decidedly quiet about its future. (Our Android 2.2 upgrade list has recently been updated with new details on several other devices, by the way; you can continue to keep tabs on it for all the latest info available.)
Sprint has not provided any specific details about its reasons for withholding Froyo from the Hero and Moment. I've reached out to the company to see if any additional information is available; I'll update this page if and when I hear anything more.
For other Android phones, the march to 2.2 moves forward. Some Nexus One users received over-the-air upgrades to Froyo earlier this week, as first reported here at Android Power. Google has not yet explained the situation, but it seems to be at the very least a sign that the company is moving closer toward a widespread rollout. The latest word points to the Motorola Droid being on-deck for Froyo next, possibly in late July, with the new Motorola Droid X following shortly thereafter.
On a related note, we're giving away a free Motorola Droid from Verizon this week. You have until Monday night if you want to enter to win.
